Basset hound-pit bulls: Rare, but cute

"Designer dogs" created by mixing two very dissimilar breeds seem to be increasingly popular.

But while there are plenty of puggles, labradoodles, snorkies, and even a few pithuahuas,  you don't see too many Basset hound pit bulls, alas. The closest that that the International Designer Dog Registry comes to is a hybrid called the bully Basset, a dog that is part Basset and part bulldog (it doesn't specify French, English, etc.)
My guess is that Basset hound-pit bulls are more of an accidental result of canine lasciviousness than a deliberate hybrid.  Here's a cute little puppy named Paul that I found offered for adoption on a pit bull rescue web site, and Chloe, another puppy who was found wandering the streets of LA. (The listings are a couple of years old, so we can only imagine what they look like now.) On MySpace, I also found this handsome fellow named Sterling , who bears a striking facial resemblance to our Madge.  Here's another basset hound-pit bull from Flickr, whose features are somewhat more pit bull-ish.

Minh and Madge. She's gone from being terrified to cuddly with us, though she's still a little fearful of strangers.

  1. I believe, from a BassetHound & Beagle owner....our basset/pit is by far the best of the three! He's well aware he is number one!

  9. We adopted a weirdo looking dog a couple years ago and slowly figured out that he was definitely a pitt/basset mix. Big ol head, 45ish pounds of muscle, nose driven with his tiny little legs and big feet. Its especially funny because he sounds just like a huge basset but looks like a pit. He is impossible to find a harness that fits him nicely and has two full handfuls of extra skin around his neck. Hes a smart dumb dog and is very food motivated and has only now gotten to be a little dog selective/toy possessive. I love him to bits.

  12. I am so glad I found this blog post. I just adopted a basset/lab mix. It was very clear to me that he was a basset/pit mix. He's about one and he's beautiful. We named him Otis. Has anyone experienced any temperament issues?

  15. ~I rescued a Bassett Hound Pit Bull mix from traffic. His name was Dodger the Danger Dog and I always told people that he was a Bass Pitt Bull Hound. He unfortunately was struck down by a car Friday. He was the most unique and intelligent dog that I have ever known. He was a genius of an animal and understood every word that I said. He even answered questions. He was the best friend that anyone could wish for. I'm heartbroken and pray that he comes back to me again someday. He was one of a kind, but I know his spirit.~

  17. Recently got a rescue pup. The rescue said he was a Catahoula/Basset hound. After looking a few pics, I think my puppy is a Basset Hound/Pit Bull. I guess other than doing a DNA study, I will never really know. WIsh I could share his photo.

  18. I rescued a beautiful Basset Bull, who has a black spot on one eye so I named her Mrs. Petey, A.K.A. Sweetie P! She is an amazing baby who is so lovable and intelligent beyond belief! I couldn't ask for a better adopted daughter!

  19. I just recently adopted a Basset/Pit and he is simply awesome. What's even more amazing, is that he is deaf. When the shelter informed me at the time of the trial sleep over, it never dawned on me to not take him. He is so smart and 40 pounds of sweet goofiness. I've been learning some sign language and we are communicating just as well as a hearing dog. I can't imagine not being his momma/pack leader.

  20. We have a Basset/Pit we got him at 6 weeks and he weighed 6.5 lbs, he is now 8 months and weighs 51 lbs. Buster is amazing with our older 11 year old staffy, and is always kissing her face. He's quite a character.

  21. So glad I found this site. Daphne is the sweetest dog ever. Funny, gentle, stubborn, neighborhood favorite. Very vocal. Impossible to get sweaters, coats for because of her weird length to girth. So I knit for her and adjust what I buy. My best dog ever

  23. I just got one!! His name is Skeeter!! I wasn't totally sure, but his features are exactly the same as the one pictured here. Short legs, very muscular hindlegs, long torso, and medium sized ears with the pitty face. He is literally the sweetest dog I've ever met! Just came home with us from the shelter yesterday!!
